Inappropriate jokes, immaculate tiles.
Each set starts with a joke we couldn't stop laughing at and ends with tiles we'd frame.

For people who appreciate beautiful things but don't always behave beautifully.
We learned to play mahjong and fell hard. For the strategy, sure, and the clack of the tiles, and the excuse to get together every week. But mostly for the tiles themselves. Every set has its own personality, and the one you bring to the table says a little something about you.
When we started looking for our own, we knew what we liked. Beautiful design, thoughtful details, great colors, and just enough personality to make things interesting. Something sophisticated without taking itself too seriously. Because while we appreciate a beautiful set of tiles, we're also the kind of people who crack inappropriate jokes between hands.
So we made our own.
Blue Tile Mahjong is our take on the game we love. Thoughtfully designed, a little unexpected, and made for people who appreciate beautiful things but don't always behave beautifully.
Stunning to look at. Scandalous to explain.
We're Houstonians. Walk through the city's older neighborhoods and you'll see street names spelled out in blue and white tile, set right into the curb at the corner. Houston adopted them in 1922, after wooden street signs kept disappearing. Plenty are still there: small, beautiful, a little worn, and completely ours. That's what we want a mahjong set to feel like.
Mahjong is a Chinese game with a long, rich history, and every set we make owes everything to it. Here's the short version of how it got to our table.
Mahjong took shape in China during the 19th century. Styles and names varied from province to province. The name refers to the sparrow, a bird that appears on one of the tiles.
Joseph Babcock, an American living in Shanghai, wrote simplified rules and added English labels and numerals. The game swept the U.S. in the mid-1920s, often sold with stereotyped imagery of China and Chinese people.
The National Mah Jongg League was founded in New York, giving the American game its own rules, jokers and a new card every year. Jewish American women made it a weekly tradition that's still going.
Through every fad, Chinese and Chinese American families kept playing, teaching and passing down the game. Today a new generation is pulling up a chair.
Our Commitment
Mahjong has a rich history rooted in Chinese culture, and we recognize that we're creating something inspired by a tradition that isn't ours by heritage. We believe it's important to honor those origins, understand the history, and give credit where it's due.
We're still learning, and we're always open to listening and doing better.
Soon. The tiles are in production now. The waitlist hears the date first, along with real photos of the finished set.
Not yet. What's on this page are design graphics of the tiles. We'll swap in product photos as soon as the finished sets arrive.
That's the whole point. They're designed to be read across a table at game speed, and pretty enough to leave out when the game is over.
Not ourselves. We'd rather point you to the makers who already do it beautifully, and we'll share our favorites here.

The waitlist
First look at the finished tiles, first chance to order, a peek at set two when it's ready, and the occasional joke. That's it.
